What is JointStrong and what is its mission?
JointStrong by IMC is dedicated to reducing the incidence, prevalence, and cost burden of musculoskeletal conditions. Our primary mission is to address the epidemic of these conditions in society, which have become one of the highest cost categories in healthcare. We aim to provide better outcomes and results than historically seen in traditional medicine by utilizing science-based methods and practices.
Why has the prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions increased so dramatically in recent decades?
The increase is attributed to changes in lifestyle habits and behaviors. Compared to a century ago, when people were more physically active in agricultural roles, modern society has become more sedentary due to the advent of technologies like smartphones and gaming systems. This leads to prolonged periods spent in unnatural postures, contributing to the rising incidence of stiff joints, herniated or bulging discs, and other musculoskeletal issues, even in young adults.
How does the traditional healthcare system often fall short in treating musculoskeletal pain?
There is a significant gap in training within medical schools and residencies regarding the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions. While a large portion of primary care physicians’ time is spent managing patients with painful joint symptoms, they often lack the specialized education in this area. This can lead to variations in patient management and sometimes premature referrals for surgery, even when non-surgical alternatives exist.
What percentage of joint surgeries might be avoidable?
Based on access to detailed claims data from large self-funded organizations, between 65% to 75% of surgeries for musculoskeletal conditions were completely avoidable if the right intervention, treatment, or care had been provided. This highlights a significant issue of potential over-utilization of surgery.
What are the early warning signs of developing joint issues?
Stiffness and pain are identified as the primary early warning signs that joint issues are developing. However, these symptoms are often ignored or attributed to aging, with people opting to manage the pain with medication rather than addressing the underlying problem.
How does a sedentary lifestyle contribute to joint stiffness and pain?
Joint systems adapt to the stresses placed upon them. If a joint is not moved through its full range of motion regularly, the supporting ligament structures can stiffen and become rigid. This loss of flexibility alters the mechanics of the joint, leading to pain and discomfort. Prolonged periods of sitting or maintaining the same posture can cause these tissues to adapt and become uncomfortable when attempting to move in other directions.
Can movement help reverse joint stiffness and pain, and avoid surgery?
Absolutely, movement is presented as a key to reversing joint stiffness and pain. While it may initially involve moving into discomfort or stiffness when moving to end range, consistently moving the joint through its full range of motion can restore normal mobility, improve function, and ultimately alleviate pain. This is often referred to as finding a directional preference, where movement in one specific direction is more effective than others for a particular condition.
How can individuals learn to self-treat and manage their musculoskeletal pain?
Most musculoskeletal conditions are described as mechanical problems rather than structural defects. Teaching patients specific movements and strategies based on their body’s directional preference allows them to self-treat and self-manage their pain. Thorough education on the principles and practices that restore joint motion is crucial, empowering individuals to take their joint systems to end range and regain the suppleness and pliability of their tissues.
